Nature lovers will want to check out Tofte Park—a peaceful spot with picnic tables, a gentle rocky beach, and views straight out to endless blue. For a little history, stop by the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum and learn how hardy fishermen shaped the region.
Tofte is also a handy jumping-off point for biking the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, hiking in nearby Temperance River State Park, or catching a fishing charter out of the harbor.
It’s humble, unhurried, and perfectly North Shore—a good place to linger, or just pass through with a pastry in hand and a lake breeze in your hair.

Lutsen Mountains Discovering Lutsen

Right in your backyard, Lutsen is more than just a launchpad for North Shore adventures—it’s a destination in its own right, packed with local charm and plenty to do year-round.

The main attraction is Lutsen Mountains, where you can ski and snowboard in winter, or ride the gondola and alpine slides when the weather warms up. The Summit Express gondola whisks you up to Moose Mountain for sweeping views—absolutely breathtaking when the fall colors set the hillsides ablaze. At the top, you’ll find direct access to the Superior Hiking Trail. It’s hard to beat a day that starts with a scenic gondola ride and turns into a hike along rocky ridges and through golden maples, all with Lake Superior shimmering in the background.

Kick off your morning at Fika Coffee, a cozy local spot with fresh brews and homemade pastries. When it’s time for a meal, Lutsen’s got you covered: Summit Chalet (at the top of the gondola) offers casual fare with panoramic views, Moguls Grille & Tap Room at Caribou Highlands is a reliable go-to for hearty lunches and dinners, and Charlie’s Alpine Bistro serves up creative dishes in a warm, inviting space. If you’re venturing a bit farther, Cascade Restaurant & Pub is always a solid choice for North Shore classics.

Discover More on the North Shore

And don’t miss North Shore Winery, just up the road from the mountain. Stop in for a tasting, linger over a glass of wine or cider, and enjoy the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere—especially lovely after a day spent outdoors.

If you’re craving more trail time, the Oberg Mountain Trailhead and Caribou Falls are both close by—each offering some of the best overlooks and waterfall views along the shore. The Superior Hiking Trail also weaves through the Lutsen area, with multiple trailheads nearby that open up miles of Northwoods wilderness to explore.

Whether you’re here for outdoor adventure, a great meal, or just a bit of quiet time in the woods, so much on the North Shore is ready to welcome you—all just minutes from your cabin.

Wander in Grand Marais

Just twenty miles up the shore, Grand Marais is where creative spirit meets the wild edge of Lake Superior. This harbor town is an irresistible mix of art, good food, quirky shops, and the kind of scenery that makes you want to stay out all day.

Start your visit with a stroll out to Artist Point—a rocky peninsula jutting into the lake, famous for its windswept views, tide pools, and ever-changing light. It’s the perfect spot to skip stones, watch the waves crash, or just let your mind wander.

Explore Downtown Grand Marais

Downtown, you’ll find an easygoing mix of galleries, shops, and cafés. Pop into the Sivertson Gallery for a taste of Northwoods art, or browse local pottery and jewelry at the studios lining Wisconsin Street. For a truly Grand Marais experience, grab a donut from World’s Best Donuts (they sell out early!), or settle in at Java Moose for a warm cup and a view of the harbor.

Love a good old-fashioned variety store? Ben Franklin is a must—stocked with everything from craft supplies to kitchen essentials, it’s a local institution. For outdoor gear, souvenirs, or just a good browse, Lake Superior Trading Post is a North Shore classic.

When hunger strikes, Grand Marais has you covered. Angry Trout Café serves up legendary lake-caught fish right on the water, while Sven & Ole’s is the spot for pizza—a staple for locals and visitors alike. Voyageur Brewing Company pours craft beers and hearty meals with a rooftop view. The Gunflint Tavern is a favorite for live music, creative pub fare, and a rooftop deck that’s tough to beat on a summer evening. For something quick, the Dockside Fish Market offers fresh smoked fish and picnic fare you can enjoy right by the lake.

Need groceries or a snack? The Cook County Whole Foods Co-op is right downtown, packed with local produce, grab-and-go deli options, and all the essentials.

For a little more adventure, walk the break wall out to the lighthouse, or rent a canoe and explore the harbor’s quieter corners.

Grand Marais is a place to linger, to explore, and to let the lake air clear your head. Whether you’re hunting for art, pizza, souvenirs, or just a good view, this town delivers—every single time.
