The North Shore is a hiker’s dream, with trails that wind through towering pines, past rushing waterfalls, and along rugged cliffs overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Superior. Whether you’re looking for a short stroll or a challenging all-day trek, the region offers options for every skill level.
Right near Ours Resort, the Superior Hiking Trail stretches over 300 miles from Duluth to the Canadian border. You can jump on the trail from multiple nearby access points: the Lutsen Mountains gondola offers a unique start with panoramic views; the Oberg Mountain Trailhead (6 miles away) features a rewarding loop with sweeping lake vistas; the Caribou Lake Trailhead (8 miles) winds through peaceful forest; and Temperance River State Park (7 miles) and Cascade River State Park (12 miles) offer rugged, scenic sections with river gorges and waterfalls. For solitude seekers, the remote trails of George Crosby Manitou State Park (28 miles) provide quiet backcountry hiking through old-growth forest and sparkling streams.
Waterfalls are a highlight of any North Shore hike. Just minutes from the resort, Caribou Falls offers a mossy gorge and cascading waters. Cascade River State Park trails showcase multiple waterfalls tumbling toward Lake Superior. Temperance River State Park features dramatic river gorges and serene forest paths.
Heading south, Tettegouche State Park is home to the tallest waterfall entirely in Minnesota—High Falls—a moderately challenging hike with breathtaking views. The park also boasts rocky shorelines and historic lighthouses. Nearby, Gooseberry Falls State Park is a classic stop with easily accessible waterfalls, boardwalks, and picnic areas, ideal for families or a quick stretch on your way up or down the shore.
